Top Tech Gadgets For Lawyers
The legal profession is one that rewards attorneys who embrace modern technology, whether it’s the fax machine, the color printer, or the smart phone. Here are eight top tech gadgets for lawyers guaranteed to make your life easier—if you don’t already have one.
Eight Top Tech Lawyer Gadgets
1. Pocket Projectors. These tiny, innovative devices allow lawyers to give presentations anywhere with a flat surface. Whether you want to share pictures with an expert witness without huddling around a phone or laptop, or run through a presentation in front of a colleague, pocket projectors are convenient and ultra portable, weighing about 5 ounces and about 4 inches by 2 inches.
2. User-encrypted flash drives. Attorneys need to safeguard client data and documents, but they also need to be able to access them while they’re on the move. The user-encrypted flash drive is a tech gadget that will help every lawyer keep his or her client data well-protected.
3. Flip video cameras. These cell phone-sized, high-definition camcorders hold about an hour’s worth of memory and are perfect for video-blogging lawyers who want to update on the go. In fact, the quality is good enough—and depending on the model, does well enough in low-light situations—for lawyers to use these gadgets for their informational videos that they post online and on their lawyer video directory.
4. The Apple iPad. This gadget tops everyone’s “best of” list, but for a reason: it’s a multipurpose computing machine, and when it comes to apps, it’s got plenty targeted squarely at lawyers: law dictionaries, rules of procedure and evidence, and penal codes, just to name a few.
5. Wireless display (WiDi) technology. Intel has developed a new gadget that allows laptops to connect to high-def televisions without wires. This means walking into any conference room and throwing up your images, presentations, and files directly onto the television screen: a handy feature for any lawyer.
6. The pen scanner. With this portable, handheld gadget, you can scan text as quickly as you can highlight it—and it will store it as well until you get a chance to upload it to your laptop or PC. Some are equipped with Bluetooth technology, enabling you to transmit the data wirelessly. Lawyers can use the pen scanner on text or notes that they’ve taken.
7. Portable solar chargers. With all these gadgets, you’re sure to run into battery issues. Portable solar chargers can charge multiple types of handheld devices, including cell phones and digital cameras, using only the power of the sun. Not only is this a great tool for lawyers, it’s also environmentally friendly.
8. Desktop charging station. Along the same lines, this gadget will allow you to charge all your portable devices at once, without using up all your power outlets. Handy for a lawyer’s home or office, this will help keep your life free of clutter.
Portability and convenience are the names of the game for lawyers, and these eight gadgets certainly fit the bill.

My favorite is the HTC evo that runs on the Android platform. I use it to do pretty much anything I want, intead of lugging a notebook.
What, no mention of smart phones? Aren’t they, like, the lifeblood of most attorneys? I swear, I think some of my colleagues had them surgically implanted into their hand!
I agree completely with MollyM. I am surprised to not see anything about smart phones, or even Android/Droid devices. Those always seemed to be quite prominent in the business world…maybe I was wrong!
Well the article was written way back on March 1, so maybe they are with the times now. Haha. Really maybe smart phones were left out on purpose, because it was mentioned in the opening paragragh, just not ranked in the list. I like the Apple IPad the most and can see how important it can be for lawyers since I’m sure they can’t remember every exact law. etc.
